Because the turn signal switch (90% chance it’s the turn signal switch) most likely shorted out and caught fire on the way home. Smoked a little, only lasted for a moment, but the car will probably be out of commission until Monday when it can go see the mechanic.

I tried to get the column covers off to do it myself but I don’t see how to get them off without breaking something as there isn’t a single screw on the entire column save the one that holds the hazard flasher button on.

Stuck driving the Tracer until then. I’ve heard this was a common issue on Berettas, and this is basically a Beretta with a facelifted interior so I’m not extremely worried.

My old one started on fire and burnt my garage down because the head gasket leaked oil onto the exhaust manifold, so it could be that.

Don’t think so. I’m well aware of that issue, but one of my relatives is a professional mechanic and said those issues won’t usually crop up for another 40 or 50k miles (mine only has 117k). This was actually smoking out of the gap in the steering column.

My buddy's grand prix did exactly the same thing... drove for several more years once the smoke cleared out.

Well, that’s a good sign. I’m going to try to get it fixed if it isn’t too expensive, though. Plus the switch could use replacing anyway - the right signal didn’t work unless you held it up in a specific way.
